"Handle With Care"
Mobile Museum Of Art
Art Museums are magical third spaces that welcome audiences into a universe of creative inspiration and cultural quandary, but a typical visit only offers an opportunity for visitors to observe the pieces on display. Artists,Calder Kamin (Austin, TX) and Jacob Reptile (New Orleans, LA) transform trash into tantalizing textures, soft sculptures, and safe spaces for audiences of all ages and abilities to appreciate art. They believe art should not only be seen but experienced.
All of the materials in this exhibition were hand-picked and rehandled into something beautiful. The artists practice creative reuse, using items that would otherwise end up in the waste stream to make their work. In a world devastated by plastic and textile pollution, these artists use their skills to create community made and interactive installations of otherworldly flora and fauna assembled from second-hand textiles found in the gulf coast region. Society demonizes many things we don’t understand, rather than see its potential. These artists' contribution for radical change is to transform our collective perception of trash.
"Handle with Care" introduces you to handmade whimsical worlds and mythical creatures as you walk through the room. Visitors are invited to cuddle, build, and play with the art in this exhibition. The artists hope these works establish a stronger connection and responsibility to the material used in this show, and may everyone see their potential to contribute to a better future full of alternative destinies for post-consumer waste.
